EVER BEEN AROUND ROBIN HOOD'S BARN???...And Other Forgotten Places!

Ever been "Around Robin hood's Barn"???....and other forgotten  places! "Around Robin hood's Barn" by the way, is the long way around...as when we were coming home from school...late!ROBIN HOOD

ROBIN HOODS BARN

My memory of these old sayings is rather dim but I wonder how many we can come up with from the good old days. These sayings really were our earliest Americana---usually brought into the current times by our favorite Aunt or Uncle, or Grandmother or Grandfather--or even our parents

I remember my mother saying things like: "Oh Piffle!" when she was skeptical of someone's story or for their excuse for not being where they should have been.

And there were other sayings like: "Don't count your chickens before they hatch!"and waiting "til the cows come home!"..... another one: "whatever floats your boat"

WHATEVER FLOATS YOUR BOAT!

 SCARCER THAN HENS TEETH

Do You remember these tid-bits? Do they take you to a place you haven't been in a long, long time???

How about something being "scarcer than hens teeth"?

Then there are always those that are definitely family attempts to control teenage behavior, when as a young woman I put on some very red lipstick---and an unhappy Uncle Don said "You're lips look like a Blackbird's backside in blueberry season!!!" BLACKBIRD IN BLUEBERRY SEASON

.... and to my wearing a little mascara about the same time he said: "You're eyes look like two burnt-holes in a blanket!!!"....talk about discouraging a teen from wearing make-up! It did work though.....I didn't put another thing on my eyes or lips for years!!

TWO BURNT HOLES

                                                BOO!!!

THEN..... THE NOT SO HUMEROUS:

There is a saying that most people do not know the origin of; when they find out they never want to use it again and chringe when they hear it now:

"Going to Hell in a hand-basket" is a saying you still hear a lot.....did you know that after the Frst World War ended, the number of quadruple amputees was more than that of any other war? These poor men came home with just a head and a trunk of their bodies left; but they were alive! For lack of a better way to handle the transport of these men, and because of lack of technology, they were moved about in "Hand-baskets". Hospitals cared for these men and Families would have their loved one with them for many months in this condition, before they passed away from the deadly gases and chemicals that they had endured.

Not such a good one to remember!!

Do you have any old sayings that you can recall??? I would love to hear some from other parts of the country---mine came from Michigan and from parents and relatives who were of British decent.

PLEASE SHARE ANY THAT YOU CAN REMEMBER!

A friend of mine, let's call him Alan, just came back from Europe and he was filled with stories of his adventures flying in these crazy times. I haven't been to Europe in so long that I was anxious to hear how things are---if the Italian food is… more
